Weekend Fun: "Pop"corn Activity!

PopcornLove
I read about this fun and simple activity in Jamie Miller's 10-Minute Life Lessons For Kids and decided to give it a little spin of my own. All you will need is your love, your 3-7 year old child, and a bag of  unpopped popcorn. Give it a try and get ready for some loving responses from your children!

Place a few pieces of unpopped popcorn in your child's hand. Let them feel the kernels and smell them, maybe even taste them if they are a little older.  Help your child describe the feeling. You can expect to hear words like "hard" and "yucky." You might want to add the words "like they're sad" to set the stage to make your point.

Place the kernels back in the bag. Let your child help you put them in the microwave to "POP" them. While the corn is popping, take this time to create some excitement and ask your child, what they think the popcorn is going to feel like when it is "POPPED."

Once the POPCORN is ready, safely take a few pieces out and now help your child feel and smell them.  Yes, you will hear words like "warm," "soft," and "yummy."

You can use this example to explain that when we are sad, angry, unkind or unhappy (negative emotions) we feel like the unpopped corn, "hard" and "yucky." When we add a little "POP" or "LOVE" to our lives, we are soft, gentle and lovable, just like the popcorn.

You can take the discussion further by asking your little one what other examples of "POP" or "LOVE" can they come up with that can help us be happy when we are sad.

Enjoy!
